Now that the weather (and all that rain!) is clearing up, we can make the most of the fresh fruit and vegetables that New Zealand has to offer.
We now have available a locally made Red wine & balsamic vinaigrette, made using our 2016 Ascolano EVOO..... or if you're feeling creative, its so easy to make your own and have fun playing with the flavours.
All four of our oils can be used as a base, depending on your preferred taste. I find the most popular for salads is our Koroneiki (blue label).
Grab a jar with lid, and experiment with oil, and perhaps mustard? garlic? citrus? red wine/white wine vinegar? honey? you cant go far wrong - shake it up and dress your favourite salad and impress your family with a healthy, tasty salad that is packed with antioxidants, and plenty of other health benefits.
Well is the end of April already, and the grove is covered in multi coloured fruit, ripening in the sun till ready to be picked and pressed into our 2016 edition.
Its a special day seeing the olives come off the trees, into large nets, then into bins to be transported straight to the local presshouse and transformed into beautiful glowing extra virgin olive oil. No wonder the oil tastes so good - nothing else is added. Each variety has its own characteristics and we cant wait to try each one and share them with you at our next market.
We have some new introductions to show you soon, and cant wait to see what you think.
In the meantime, i'll be patient and wait till the oil is ready....
Well another month has gone by... the olives are rapidly growing and the grove is looking so pretty and green. We were at the General Collective Market in Ellerslie, Auckland yesterday - thanks to everyone who came along and enjoyed some great locally made goodies, crafts, and special nz artworks. We had our three 2015 e.v.o.o's for everyone to enjoy, and its was so good hearing more stories about your favourite oil as well as meeting new buddies and learning about your special poochestoo!!
The 2016 harvest isn't too far away now - plans are underway and we can't wait to see and taste this years oil. Here's hoping for this great weather to continue and produce us some amazing 2016 Two black dogs extra virgin olive oil! ps. the Two black dogs say hi!
This is a recipe by Lyn Potter - it works well with our Ascolano or Leccino oil.
See Lyn's blog at http://www.focussedonfood.blogspot.co.nz/
We started off by making our own tahini (so easy!)
The hummus is light and citrussy. In many hummus recipes the oil is mixed into the hummus but I think the flavour of it gets somewhat lost that way.
It's nicer to drizzle it generously on top.
1 can of chickpeas (400 grams)
1 clove of garlic (peeled and smashed)
3 tablespoons of tahini
juice of 1/2 lemon
juice of 1/2 orange
1 teaspoon of salt (or to taste)
a good dash of hot sauce ( I used Hot Samoan Boys Chilli Sauce)
a drizzle of Two Black Dogs extra virgin olive oil
Drain the chickpeas, reserve the liquid
In a food processor put the chickpeas, 2 tablespoons of the reserved liquid, and all the other ingredients except the olive oil. Whizz till smooth.
If the mixtur...
This new year marks our first anniversary of being a part of our grove, and wow what a year it has been. There have been a lot of firsts and exciting days discovering new things and meeting some fantastic local people.
The new olives are now well and truly established on our trees, and we are really enjoying meeting you all at the markets we are attending.
Recently we have introduced a Leccino and Koroneiki oil to our 2015 range, these are beautiful and each very different so you can pick your favourites.
So far the Koroneiki has been the fav - with salad season upon us, this is perfect to enhance your fresh greens.
Hope you all had a relaxing break and are looking forward to the year ahead - we are :)
See us next at the Leigh Market this Sunday, the 10th of January xxx
We were recently featured in the Mangawhai section of the Kaipara Lifestyler newspaper - i must admit that it took a bit of patience and persistence to get all four of us in the photo, the pooches needed a bit of persuading to sit still.
Joey - the senior dog on the right hand side was sopping wet from a swim in the dam, but it all worked out in the end!
I cant believe its now the 1st of December - we have two markets planned before christmas and the Mangawhai Gala is now just a month away.
Happy December all - enjoy the warmer weather and the lead up to XMAS :)
Well it sure is a crazy busy time for everyone at the moment, we have now finished our pruning of the grove for 2015, and looking at the rapidly filling calendar for the coming few weeks!!!
We have a stall this Thursday night in Red beach - at Peak Pilates & Physiotherapy 42 Red beach road @ 6:30pm - 8:30pm. We'd love you to come say hi if you can make it, try our oil and perhaps spoil a loved one for Christmas (or any occasion) with a bottle of our 2015 harvest oil. There will be heaps of other stall holders, so a great chance to grab some pressies.
Our gift pack options are now available online - giving you a selection of ideas and the choice of a christmas themed gift card or a summer themed card to make it easy for you.
Another update, our oil is now available from Mangawhai Hidden Treasures, just down the road from the grove @ 20 Bagnal road. Open Wed and Thurs 9am-4pm...
Now that the weather is finally drying out a bit, we have been able to spend more time with the trees and completing the pruning and continuing on with the maintenance programme (yay!) The grove is rapidly changing at the moment, flowers are appearing, and everything is looking beautifully green and lush.
The olive trees are looking a lot happier already after their 're-styling', and the sunlight is streaming through the branches to the ground beneath.
I came across this tree with its heart shaped cut and had to capture it :) pretty cute!
The two black dogs have been spending more time cooling off in the dams cold water, and are starting to get used to the temperature increase (their black coats and the summer heat are not a great combo)
We have some new plans coming up over this summer to introduce you to our oil - more news to be announced soon.
