We came to know and love olives and the beautiful green oil they produce, by chance - after finding a beautiful property in Mangawhai that happened to have a fair few trees on it and deciding to jump in gumboots (yes my first pair) and all, and give it a go.
Its been a special time over the past few months - seeing our teamwork transform the property from a mass of knee high grass and unwanted weeds, to a mass of trees with ripening green fruit, sun glistening through the branches, and landscaping taking shape.
I think i have permanent 'gumboot' tan lines for life, and a new appreciation for slowing down and absorbing your surroundings. There's been sore muscles, unexpected encounters with the local eel, and big achievements - its all been worth it. The property is home to 1000-odd well established olive trees, some woolly grass eaters, pukekos, ducks, rabbits, hedgehogs, and of course the Two Black Dogs. The grove is both dogs' happy place - they can sniff and run amongst the trees, and sample olives that have fallen to the ground. Hence the name, Two Black Dogs - Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Its all about where it comes from, and its a little piece of our special place we'd like to share.
